Retaining & Seating Walls
Segmental block walls engineered for drainage and load — a slope you can't use becomes finished, usable space.
The Straight Story
A wall is a drainage project that happens to hold back dirt
Most failed retaining walls in this area didn't fail because the block was weak — they failed because water built up behind them. Louisville clay drains slowly, so a wall without gravel backfill and a way for water to get out is really a dam, and every freeze puts it under load. The lean starts small and gets worse every year.
We build segmental block walls the way the systems are engineered to be built: a compacted base course below grade, clean gravel backfill, drainage that daylights the water somewhere harmless, and setback on every course. Capped seating walls get the same treatment at patio scale — a place to sit that doubles as an edge for the space.
The payoff is usable ground. A slope you could only mow sideways becomes a flat yard, a terraced bed, or the level pad a patio needs.
How It Goes
Four steps, no surprises
- 01
We come look
A free on-site visit. We walk the yard, take grades and measurements, and talk through what's actually worth doing.
- 02
Scope & number
A written scope with materials, base depth, and drainage spelled out — and one honest price, not a range.
- 03
We build it
Excavation, compaction, base, then finish work. Daniel is on site running the job, not managing it by phone.
- 04
We keep it up
Optional weekly maintenance so the beds, edges, and lawn look the way they did the week we finished.
Questions
Asked on most estimates
Straight answers up front — and anything we missed gets answered on the free on-site visit.
How tall can you build?
Segmental walls handle most residential grade changes, often as stepped terraces rather than one tall wall — terraces drain better and look better. If a site genuinely needs an engineered structure, we tell you that at the estimate instead of overbuilding block.
Why do retaining walls fail?
Water, almost every time. Clay holds it, winter freezes it, and a wall without gravel backfill and drainage takes that pressure on every course. Our walls are built to let water out.
Can you fix an existing wall?
Sometimes — it depends on whether the base was right. We'll give you a straight answer on-site: rebuild the failed section, or stop throwing money at a wall that was built wrong from the first course.
